BUTUAN
Butuan is an urbanised city located in Agusan del Norte in the Philippines, and is famous for its history, culture, and natural beauty. Butuan has a known history dating back to the 4th century, and a culture that has been influenced by the great cultures of China and India. It was the centre of trade in Philippines in the 11th century. Today, it is a sprawling city with plenty of buzz and activity, as well as some undeniably unique attractions.
Butuan is accessible by air, land, and water, and either option will give you spectacular views of the area around the city. Once there, you will have plenty of transport options, such as bus, taxi, or motorised tricycles. Butuan has two major museums, and both of them have more than a few stories to tell. Balangay Shrine Museum and Butuan Regional Museum, each containing various historical artefacts, are well worth a visit.
Among the attractions in the city are Mount Mayapay, which has much meaning and influence on Butuan’s historic and archaeological discoveries; Agusan River, the widest and deepest navigable river in Mindanao; Bood Promontory 1st Easter Mass Eco Park; Magellan’s Landing Site; Nipa Wine Distillery; and the Banza Church Ruins, the oldest ruin of a stone church in the entire island of Mindanao.
For those looking to partake in the activities that the city has to offer, Mount Mayapay offers guided mountain hiking adventures. The area is also full of many beaches, especially in the nearby cities of Carmen, Buenavista, and Cabadbaran. The city also has a few nightlife options, with several clubs and bars being present. The city is also known for its many festivals, including the City Fiesta and Kahimunan Festival.
